The last frivolous accusation about my military service that the Neocon group put out was that I had not served as the Sergeant Major of Marine Forces Pacific, and that I had not been awarded the Legion of Merit Medal…i.e., that I was a perpetrator of “stolen valor” and was embellishing my military record.  Following the DD-214 that shows my activation and service as SgtMaj. of MARFORPAC and award of the Legion of Merit medal are the slate and appointment documents, as well as a copy of my Legion of Merit certificate.

The DD-214 dated 2002/08/06 (block 12 b) shows my shows my last unit as HQSVCBN, MARFORPAC, Camp Smith, HI (block 8 a).  I was the Sergeant Major (block 11), and received the Legion of Merit medal (DD-215, block 5, item 13).

The document following the DD-214 and DD-215 is the “slate”, or selection for the position.  The process was that I had been nominated by the Sergeant Major and Commander of MCRSC, and then voted upon by a board of senior Sergeants Major (Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps, Sergeant Major of MARFORPAC, Sergeant Major of MARFORLANT, and Sergeant Major of MARFORRES).  Once the board picked my name, it was forwarded to the Commander of MARFORPAC for concurrence, and then “slated” and appointed by the Commandant of the Marine Corps, Gen. James Jones (who electronically “signed” the document on line 3).

The next document in the series is the Billet Assignment letter from the Commandant of the Marine Corps, signed by SgtMaj. Pinero, the Sergeant Major of MCRSC at Headquarters, U.S. Marine Corps.

The last document is the copy of the certificate where “the President of the United States (…) awarded the Legion of Merit” to me, and was signed and presented to me by LtGen. Earl Hailston, Commander, Marine Forces Pacific.  He presented this medal (along with several letters from various dignitaries) to me when he presided over my retirement ceremony at the Iwo Jima monument in Washington DC (he had flown out from Qatar, with his Colors which we used at the ceremony) – see the picture of me, wearing the medal in front of the Monument when I was speaking at my retirement ceremony.
